2 Days Tour From Marrakech To Erg chigaga Desert
Marrakech, Morocco
This 2-day tour offers a true Sahara adventure in a short time. Traveling from Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains, you’ll visit Ouarzazate and the beautiful Draa Valley before reaching M’hamid, the gateway to the desert. From there, a thrilling 4x4 off-road drive takes you across rocky plains and sandy tracks to Erg Chigaga desert, Morocco’s highest and most remote dunes. Enjoy a camel ride, a sunset over the dunes, dinner under the stars, and an overnight stay in a desert camp.
The next morning begins with a magical sunrise in the Sahara before crossing the wild Lake Iriki plateau towards Foum Zguid. On the way back to Marrakech, you pass through Taznakht, a Berber town famous for carpets, and then cross the Atlas Mountains once more, arriving in Marrakech by early evening.
Your 2-day desert adventure begins with an early departure from Marrakech at 7:00 AM. Crossing the spectacular High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), you will enjoy breathtaking scenery and traditional Berber villages along the way. Shortly after Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco,” the road continues along the Draa Valley, famous for its endless palm groves, kasbahs, and fortified villages. Lunch will be served in Zagora or in Tamgroute, where you can visit the traditional pottery workshops or the ancient Koranic library. From there, the journey takes you to M’hamid, the last village before the vast Sahara. Leaving the paved road behind, your 4x4 vehicle ventures off-road for about two hours through stony desert and sand plains until the majestic Erg Chigaga dunes rise before you. Considered Morocco’s most spectacular and remote sand sea, these dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, with peaks reaching up to 300 meters in height. Upon arrival, you can enjoy a camel ride or try sandboarding while watching the sun set over the golden dunes. Dinner will be served under the stars, followed by a night in your private nomadic or luxury tent at the desert camp.
Wake up early to witness the magical sunrise over the dunes and enjoy breakfast in camp. Afterwards, the adventure continues as you cross the wild Sahara plateau and the dry bed of Lake Iriki, once a vast seasonal lake and now a breathtaking desert plain. Reaching Foum Zguid, the first town after the desert, you return to paved roads and stop for lunch. In the afternoon, the route passes through Taznakht, a Berber town renowned for its traditional carpets and weaving. The journey then continues back across the High Atlas Mountains before descending into the plains of Marrakech, arriving in the early evening around 17:30–18:00.
